On a tight freeze/thaw cycle Ice dams may spread further and further both vertically and horizontally on a roof surface. Thus increasing the chance of severe damage to the roof as a whole, instead of being isolated in a few areas.
While there are no way to tame the weather, there exists several ways to limit the damage caused by Ice Dams:
- Using ice-melt chemicals to break-up Ice Dams:
Either method, while effective, can leave your roof looking… well, uh… less than desirable.
- Ice rakes/roof rakes (or simlar type of tools):
However, these can be pricey, require the user to be outside in the cold/snow, can damage the roof surface, and depending on the weather, may have to be repeated regularly.
